2 restored Superflows w/Yamaha engines in SoCal

Saw the blue one listed on scoot.net and emailed the owner. Raul just wrote me back. He has 2 Superflows -- both have been restored. The baby blue one apparently has new chrome. It appears that the beige one has been blacked out instead of rechromed. He says he needs to sell urgently and that the blue one is $3150, the beige is $2750.

Here's the unusual part: he has replaced the stock engine with a "125cc Yamaha engine". I wrote back for details, but I'm guessing it's the "Yamaha-designed" motor that's in so many Chinese import scooters these days. Hard to say if it's really a Yamaha motor or a Yamaha clone. Anyway, it's a 4-stroke, so they should be low emissions (no blue smoke) and reliable. But I'm not sure about power...replacing a 200cc 2-stroke with a 125cc 4-stroke seems like a step in the wrong direction.

If you're interested, Raul can be contacted at ltdtower at hotmail dot com

blue one just posted to ebay

$2150

Since having problems with my engine i thought about replacing the engine with one of my other honda elite 150 or 250 motors
but i did just get new motor from BOB so i might give that a chance first

Re: 2 restored Superflows w/Yamaha engines in SoCal

I've been discussing Raul's choice of engines in several emails to Rabbit owners. We were trying to decide if a 125cc engine would be a turd in a bike as big and heavy as the S601. His ebay listing answers some questions...he says it has a 1995 Yamaha 125 scooter engine, which means it's from a Riva 125. I found this page of specs:
http://www.geocities.com/ferrisl/scooter/specs.htm

It appears that the Riva engine is air-cooled, 4-stroke, overhead cam, and rated at 11.4 BHP. According to Kouji Yamada's site (and the owner's manual), the 601 is rated at 11 horsepower, though a couple of mine have shiny gold stickers on the frame from American Rabbit Corp that claim 18 horsepower.

On this page:

http://www.geocities.com/ferrisl/scooter/faq.htm

the loyal Riva owner claims the bike will go 57 MPH. With patience, the 601 is supposed to go 62 MPH.

Raul claims that the engine swap is really straightforward.

My initial reaction to moving from a 2-stroke 200 to a 4-stroke 125 was "no freakin' way", but it sounds like this engine may not be too bad. I'd been thinking about a Honda engine for one project 601 I have in pieces, but aren't all the Hondas that are bigger than 80cc water-cooled? The 601 does have a grill, and a radiator could be tucked behind that (with long hoses!). There's a guy with a modern water-cooled fuel-injected Vespa 250 motor for sale here, and I've been debating going out there with a tape measure to see if it would fit. Maybe it's bad to put an Italian motor in a Japanese scoot, but it would be fun to have 25 horsepower!

I've been thinking the same thing
even 57 would be fast enough for me
for what i need it to do
i was looking more at the reliability and ease to work on and find parts for
i just finished a vespa project
now i'll have some time to look at the flow again and see what to do
shame - i just saw a riva 125 sell on ebay for a couple hundred - local too
