Re: Carb part for Mikuni Kogyo md22

Have you asked Kouji at Rabbit House? I think he lists it on his website...not sure if it's exactly the same carb or not, but I had an issue with an overflowing carb on a 1967 125 Rabbit. The problem: the set that I got had a needle, a seat, and a rubber o-ring. The needle is too short to fit inside the seat, and the only conclusion I could reach is that I was supposed to stick the o-ring inside the seat so that the needle would seat against the o-ring instead of the brass. This didn't work -- the needle didn't seat properly and fuel kept flowing. I believe that the faces of the needle and seat are precisely machined to match, and that an o-ring crammed up against the seating surface is an unlikely solution if you want a leak-free valve. However, I also know that Kouji is clever at coming up with solutions for "unobtanium" parts, and I can only assume that the kit must work in some way...I ran out of time to tackle that particular project...I think I tried cleaning the old parts and reinstalling...the valve usually closes, but sometimes I'll find a puddle under the scoot. I should email Kouji for clarification on the proper use of his kit. I would also think that there's nothing particularly special about a fuel needle and seat, and I'd guess that Mikuni probably used the same needle/seat on multiple carbs (cheaper than unnecessarily re-tooling). If the thing screws into the threads in the carb and is the appropriate length so the float can switch flow on/off appropriately, that's about all that matters, I think, right? I wonder if going to a motorcycle junkyard would help to find a replacement. Mikuni is still in biz...I wonder if they could help. I've also seen guys on Ebay who claim to sell rebuild kits for virtually any Japanese bike of any era...if you got out your micrometer and sent a couple of pics, I wonder if they could help....

These guys are official importers for Mikuni in the US:

FOX DISTRIBUTING, INC.
P.O. Box 1126 50 N. 17TH ST.
PHONE: (630) 513-9700
FAX: (630) 513-9702

Maybe give them a call and see what they say about an MD22. They may say, "a what?" but it's worth a try.

Kouji uses "frames" on his website, so I can't put a direct URL to the page for the needle valve, but go to this page:

http://www.ne.jp/asahi/rabbit-house/yamada/rabbit10.htm

Check the links on the left -- look for ones that say "S301B". The first one is a carb gasket kit, and the link just below it is for the needle valve. He doesn't show the o-ring that came with mine, and I see the page was updated in January (I bought mine 5 years ago), so maybe he has located the "proper" part. 3000 yen is $30 US, BTW. You can email Kouji in English (keep it simple) and he's good about replying.

BTW, these are parts for the S301B -- you have an S402B, and the only major difference between the 2 is 25cc -- the 301B is a 125cc scooter, but otherwise they look the same and use the same carb.
