Oren, I'm game for a couple of those bladders.

By the way, you might post something about having some bladders made on the forum at [email protected] as there are several Rabbit owners over there who might also be interested.

I'd be interested in several diaphragms as well. I just wrote Greg Clauss about it, but I think most of his rubber parts are cosmetic where precise dimensions and hardness are not crucial. I think this might be a job for a "real" rubber seal manufacturer, but they probably need an intact original to make a copy.

I've never seen a roller bearing quite like that one...have you tried contacting any bearing manufacturers with the photo from that Japanese blog to see if they sell that type of bearing? Fuji didn't make the bearing themselves, I'm sue, but who knows whether or not the original bearing manufacturer is still in existence, or whether or not they still make that type of bearing...

If you know a mechanical engineer or a master machinist, ask them if they can find the bearing in their Boston Gear catalogue. If it ain't in there, it never existed!

I did try writing to McMaster, but they replied with a "we don't sell those". I thought they sold everything like this. emoticon

Oren,

I will certainly buy a couple of those rubber diaphrams if somebody reproduces them.

As for the bearing, if you could find an automotive engineer, they have these real thick books that show every bearing anybody used anywhere (a Boston Gear catalogue comes to mind). Nobody has custom made bearings for just one vehicle model (it would be terribly expensive), rather they buy them "off the shelf" from OEM bearing manufacturers.

Back in my misspent youth, I had lots of Isettas, Messerschmitts, Bianchinas, Goggomobiles, Berkeleys, etc. and I used to get bearings for them by looking them up in my Dad's Boston Gear catalogue. I remember the Isetta front wheel bearings were used on a number of cars, including an early 1950's Kaiser.

Well, yeah, bearings are "standard", untill it's a bearing from the vehicle YOU restore. The bottom connecting rod bearing (see photos in the link) is a weird bearing, which I have a hard time finding. A shop ordered me one which, on the paper, looks like it's going to fit there, but is slightly narrower.

As for the pin, which is the inner race of the bearing: I was suggested to machine the old surface, and slip on a new. The new surface, like the one visible in the third photo in the link above, can be purchased in a bearing shop. It has the proper outer diameter, but not the proper width. That can be taken care too, at a metal shop, the question is how pricey it's going to get.

The diaphragms production will take some time. I'm trying to move on with this, with another guy, but we're both busy.

Ah, yes, the restoration process is always fraught with "brick walls" to make us tear our hair out and gnash out teeth. I'm probably going to find that I will need that same bearing!

Frist report from Jerusalem!

We just came back from a visit to Jerusalem. We went to the garage I mentioned here: http://bfujirabbit.runboard.com/t128#post492

The garage is owned by two partners. Today the younger one (85) was there. The older, who is the Rabbit specialist, comes Sun-Thu, 10-12AM.

The first remark: The man was not grumpy at all! He was very cooperative, and we agreed I'll help him to locate parts for his machine.

That shop was the Fuji Rabbit dealer in Jerusalem, back in the sixties. These two men have been partners from '51.

They really have a working Rabbit S601 there. In addition, the man offered to give me any help I need, in finding parts. I will have to go there again, when the second man is present.

I still don't know what parts they have. They said they might have a new grill (smiff? you want it?), and maybe rabbit side logos. I saw a fuel gauge, just lying there on the table.

As I said, I promised my help to them as well. Right now they need new tires for the S601 they have. Does anyone know where can I order tires for Rabbit S601???

Oren,

I'm interested in the Grill, Rabbit logos, and Fuel Guage, as those are in very poor shape on my Fuji.

I am also in need of the various chrome trim pieces as all of them on my rabbit are rusty, some very badly.

I'll have to do some checking on the tires, but some time back I found some dealers that had 4.00 x 8 scooter tires . . . all I gotta do is find those names and e-mail addresses.
