hello/introduction

Hi, I just bought a 402AT. I live in Sacramento, California. The rabbit is having some difficulties: battery charging problems, what I think are carburetion problems. We'll see as I get into figuring it out. But I'm hopeful these will be sorted out in short order. -borther.

Hey borther-

Sorry for the slow reply. Welcome! Activity here tends to wax and wane. You picked up the Blue 402AT from the Bay Area? You bought it from a seller who'd never bothered to transfer the title, so it's still in Bob Slote's name?

What are the charging problems? The batteries are probably a million years old -- I'd probably start by checking there. As for the carb, if a good cleaning doesn't take care of it, you can probably get a rebuild kit/parts from Kouji at Rabbit House in Japan...

Hi Shane, sorry also for my delayed reply. Yes, this is the Rabbit formerly owned by Bob Slote. You know this Rabbit? Registration has since been sorted out and it's in my name now. Batteries are new. It turns out that I seized the engine. Not sure the source of the seize, but I have my suspicions andI won't go into that because I've since put new rings on the piston, honed the cylinder and cleaned everything up. Got it running the other night for about a minute and then there was no spark - I think some random electrical gremlins that need exorcising. I'm confident that it will get running, it's just slow going at the moment and I don't have much free time. Cheers, -borther.

Update on the "no spark" situation. The other night I inspected the flywheel and had as good a look as I can through the slots to the condenser and points. The points appear to be missing the little nubbins that rides on the cammed shaft of the flywheel, so the points never open. The nubbins could very well have just popped off. I don't have a flywheel puller (yet) so I couldn't take the flywheel off to see if the nubbins is floating around in there and to take a closer more determinative look, but if my observations are correct, I've solved this problem. Now just a waiting game to get new points and condenser. cheers, -borther.

Re: hello/introduction

another update: my rabbit is hopping! Sounds great, fires up on the first kick. The problem was the points, and with a little bit of dremel tooling the new points fit just fine. Carburetion feels dialed in, but that's still a bit of a mystery to me and will require some time to fiddle with. Shifting action isn't quite like butter, but I think things are still getting worked in after a long sit.

New discovery: the starter is really weak and the lights get dim if I'm riding at night and eventually the engine will die if I run with the lights on. Charging light is glowing at low RPMs, but off at higher RPMs. So not sure what's going on there (yet). The service manual has a dynamo troubleshooting section so I'm going to go through that with a fine toothed comb and see what I can come up with. Just as an initial observation, though it seems in great shape, the dynamo has 45 year old magnets and there's a little bit of grime in there. Also, the regulatory is original so that may be needing attention. If anyone's had similar experiences, please share. Thanks, -borther.
